Markdown to Slack formatter

Slack uses its own “mrkdwn”, not Markdown. Convert headings, bold, links, lists and tables into text Slack actually renders.

Slack mrkdwn vs. Markdown

Slack’s message format, documented as mrkdwn in Slack’s API docs, uses single characters for emphasis and angle brackets for links, and has no headings or tables. That matters most for bots and incoming webhooks, where text is sent exactly as written. Headings here become bold lines, and tables become a fixed-width block so columns stay aligned.

Typing in the Slack app?

If you paste into the Slack desktop app, you can also copy rich text instead: render it with Markdown to rich text and paste the formatted result.

Other formats

Markdown converts to: Confluence, Jira, LaTeX, BBCode, MediaWiki, AsciiDoc, reStructuredText, plus HTML, PDF, Word and Excel.

Questions people ask

Does Slack support Markdown?
Only a subset, with different symbols. Slack calls it mrkdwn: *bold*, _italic_, ~strike~ and <url|text> links. Headings and tables aren’t supported.
How do I make a table in Slack?
Slack has no tables. The converter turns a Markdown table into space-aligned columns inside a code block, which stays readable.
Does this work for Block Kit?
Yes, use the output in a mrkdwn text object of a section block.
