Excel to Markdown table converter

Open an .xlsx file or paste cells from Excel or Google Sheets. Get an aligned Markdown table in one step, with nothing uploaded.

Two ways to convert Excel to Markdown

  1. Copy and paste. Select the range in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice and press Ctrl/Cmd+C, then paste into the left box. Spreadsheets copy cells as tab-separated text, which the converter reads directly.
  2. Open the file. Press “Open .xlsx file” and choose the workbook. Pick a sheet if there are several; the whole used range is converted.

What happens to your data

  • The first row becomes the table header (untick the option if your sheet has none).
  • Columns that contain only numbers, currency or percentages are right-aligned with ---:.
  • Pipes in cells are escaped and line breaks inside cells become spaces.
  • Formatting such as colours, bold and merged cells isn’t representable in a Markdown table.

Need to edit the table before using it? Paste the result into the table generator via Import.

Questions people ask

How do I convert an Excel table to Markdown?
Either copy the cells in Excel and paste them into the box, or open the .xlsx file and pick a sheet. The Markdown table appears instantly; copy or download it.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The .xlsx file is read in your browser with the open-source read-excel-file library. Nothing is sent to a server.
Are formulas converted?
The calculated value saved in the file is used, not the formula. Dates are shown as YYYY-MM-DD.
Can I convert Google Sheets?
Yes. Select the range in Google Sheets, copy and paste here, or download the sheet as .xlsx or .csv and open it.
What about merged cells and formatting?
Markdown tables have no merged cells, colours or fonts. Merged cells keep their value in the first cell; formatting is dropped.
Can I go the other way?
Yes, use Markdown to Excel to turn a Markdown table into an .xlsx or CSV file.
