How to paste into Confluence

Confluence Cloud’s editor no longer accepts typed wiki markup directly, but it still converts it: open the page, press + (Insert) → Markup, choose Confluence wiki, paste the output and press Insert. Confluence Data Center also offers Markdown in the same dialog, but it handles fewer elements (tables and code languages are often lost), which is why converting to wiki markup first is more reliable.

What converts

Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, images, nested bullet and numbered lists, block quotes, fenced code with language, horizontal rules and tables. Task lists become ☐ / ☑ characters, since wiki markup has no checkbox syntax.

Other formats

Markdown converts to: Jira, Slack, LaTeX, BBCode, MediaWiki, AsciiDoc, reStructuredText, plus HTML, PDF, Word and Excel.

Questions people ask

Can Confluence import Markdown directly?
Partly. The Insert → Markup dialog has a Markdown option, but complex tables and code languages are often dropped. Converting to Confluence wiki markup first keeps more structure.
Is Confluence wiki markup the same as Jira markup?
Yes, both Atlassian products share the same wiki markup syntax, so this output also works in Jira. There is a dedicated Markdown to Jira page too.
Where do I paste the output?
In Confluence Cloud: Insert (+) → Markup → Confluence wiki. In older Confluence Server versions you can also switch the editor to wiki markup.
